Scientist Profile: April Goebl

April Goebl

Name: April Goebl

Hometown: Salt Spring Island. A small island off the coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Hobbies: Rock climbing, hiking mountains, cooking dinner with friends, reading, learning languages, travelling by bicycle.

What do you study? I study how changes in DNA (molecules that make up genes and are found in the nucleus of cells) can lead to disease.  We observe how adding or taking away these changes can affect the health of a cell and a whole human!  We often use special cells called stem cells to study this.

Why is it important?  Studying DNA changes can make us learn more about disease. Once we know more about diseases we can try and treat or cure them. Also the more knowledge we gain about DNA, genes and cells now, the better for future generations of scientists in making discoveries for human health!

What do you like about being a scientist?  I love being a scientist because science explains life!  Science explains why the heart beats and why the moon changes shape.  Being a scientist means learning new things all the time!
