What do you enjoy most about being at Salk?
Being on campus is amazing. I try to take walking breaks after lunch to find new spaces on campus that I haven’t seen before. In addition to the beautiful campus, everyone is so fun and kind here.
Jonas Salk said “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.” What dream do you hope becomes reality?
One of my passions lies in education equality and accessibility. When I was in high school, and even in college, being a scientist seem so out of reach. I thought that scientists needed to know everything or go through decades of expensive education to start finding answers. My role in Education Outreach, especially with SciChats, breaks down those barriers for students and allows them to visualize themselves in the scientist’s place.
What’s the last book you read?
I have recently started the series Red Rising by Pierce Brown, currently on the second book. Really engaging science fiction and dystopian future series. I am also reading through Level 4 Virus Hunters of the CDC by Joseph B. McCormick, which discusses the stages of health intervention and detection of major viruses around the world during the 1970’s.
Favorite board game, and why?
My brothers and I have very intense competitions with Settlers of Catan and even create new rules to make it more challenging. I don’t get to play it often, but I always get a little too competitive with Catan.
Favorite sport to play/favorite sport to watch?
I love swimming or paddleboarding in the ocean. During the spring through late fall, I go swimming in the ocean two to three times a week. I keep flippers, a swimsuit and goggles in my car at all times, just in case I have the time to get in the water after work.
Book character you would most like to be, and why?
Hands down, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. I grew up reading and watching Lord of the Rings and Gandalf was always my favorite.
